ESTOBÁN HURRIED to find Theodyne. He and the cardgrans were not far from the doorway leading to the garden. DeRosa lay on a bench, his skin stretched taut over his cheekbones, face pale, lips blanched. Sweat rolled from Theodyne’s brow, and his hair around his face was damp.

A thick stench of vomit filled the space.

Theodyne stepped back and wiped at his forehead with his sleeve. “What is going on in the courtyard?”

“Jolen allowed himself to be arrested by the Rinni’s guards.”

“What?” Theodyne started to the garden. Fury trailed him like a comet.

Estobán grabbed both of Theodyne’s arms and held him back. “He requests you to turn yourself over as well. He has something planned, but I do not know what it is.”

“He’s gone mad.”

Cardgran Jarens from the city-state of Auflaven near the border of Kraukeur stepped forward. He was a slight man with a shock of white hair and a wizened face. “Master Theodyne has saved the life of our most beloved demigoge. We will not let him fall.”

Estobán bowed to the cardgran. “And I would not ask it if I did not believe Master Jolen has a plan, and also didn’t fear for his life.”

“You think they’ll try to kill him now he’s in custody?” Theodyne’s expression softened. Worry pulled his brow into a v.

“There is that, but I think it’s already begun. He’s losing a lot of blood for a wound that was on the mend.”

Estobán hardly had the words out before Theodyne was in motion again, leaving the safety of the villa for the chaos of the garden. With a heavy heart, he watched as Theodyne walked up to the guard captain with his hands out.

Cardgran Jarens placed a comforting hand on Estobán’s shoulder. “Fear not, my son. We will not turn from you in this hour of uncertainty.”

“I thank you, Your Eminence.” He continued to watch the scene unfold as Theodyne was led away to the horrified guests looking on.

Estobán turned back to Cardgran Jarens. “Do you happen to know the name of the Rinni’s magus?”

Cardgran Jarens’s mouth turned down at the corners. He sniffed as if he smelled something foul. “Hazrael.”

At least now he had a name to take to Master Nico and the Gold School. With the support of the cardgrans, Jolen and Theodyne would be released soon, but it was going to come at a price. Estobán only wondered if Master Nico would pay it.
